New York Jets Rumors: The starting spot opposite of Darrelle Revis in the Jets defense was thought to be one of the camp battles to keep an eye on, but it seems as if the Jets have things figured out there already.

New York Jets rumors will pick up again in the coming days as training camp is just around the corner and set to begin this week. We will see a ton of action as players will fight to move up the depth chart and secure spots on the 53-man roster.

The Jets have a couple of positions that we will see training camp battles in the coming weeks for playing time. Outside linebacker opposite of Lorenzo Mauldin is open, as well as the starting cornerback spot opposite of Darrelle Revis.

The Jets may have the cornerback scenario played out already though. According to Darryl Slater of New Jersey Advanced Media, the Jets have Marcus Williams locked in as their nickel cornerback.

Normally when a player is referred to as the nickel corner, they take over slot cornerback duties when a team changes its defensive package. That is not the case with the Jets according to Slater, as Buster Skrine is expected to start opposite of Revis on the outside, but move to the slot in  nickel packages with Williams taking over on the outside.

"They’ll handle the cornerback duties opposite Darrelle Revis — with Skrine playing outside in base defense and Williams playing outside in nickel, while Skrine aligns in the slot. Or at least that’s how the situation looks right now. I wouldn’t expect that cornerback deployment to change between now and Week 1."

Skrine was signed last season to help bolster the Jets secondary as their slot man, with Revis and Antonio Cromartie on the outside. With Cromartie no longer with the team, Skrine should move outside in base sets with Williams taking over there when the Jets change their scheme and add more defensive backs into the fold.

It makes sense to get Williams on the field as much as possible, as he was one of the more productive players for the Jets in 2015. Despite playing limited snaps as he was fourth on the depth chart, Williams made the most of his chances.

Williams led the team with six interceptions last season, adding 27 combined tackles to go along with 1.5 sacks, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. The sack, forced fumble and fumble recoveries were the first of his career. He was able to provide those numbers in only 13 games played last season.

The Jets have some depth at cornerback, as they also have former first round pick Dee Milliner, Dexter McDougle and this year’s fourth round pick Juston Burris in the fold.

Williams could be pushed by any of those three players for snaps this season, but it sounds like his role is rather secure at the current time. Slater says that he does not envision a change coming prior to Week 1, barring injury, which speaks a lot to the job security that Williams has heading into training camp this week.
