New York Jets Rumors: Sheldon Richardson is reportedly not garnering much interest on the trade market.

Recent New York Jets rumors involve defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson. Richardson has been dangled by the Jets on the trade market in recent months, but a deal was unable to be struck.

The Jets were reportedly close to trading Richardson to the Dallas Cowboys before the NFL Trade Deadline last season. But, the asking price was way too high and the Cowboys passed on the deal.

Richardson remained with the Jets through the 2016 season. But, the trade chatter has not stopped this offseason. Earlier in the offseason it was reported that the Jets would be lucky to get a third round pick for Richardson. Given the other deals that were completed, Richardson’s spotty off-field history, and his struggles in 2016 it made sense.

More from Jets Rumors

Most recently, it sounded like the Jets would have to lower their asking price again if they wanted to move Richardson. The New York Post reported that a fourth round pick would be about as much as the Jets could get for Richardson.

Richardson is in a contract year, making $8.1 million this season, which will complicate a deal. There is also the rumor floating around that he is seeking a $100 million deal. We’ll give you a minute to recompose yourself from laughing at that contract demand.

Given what the Philadelphia Eagles traded to the Baltimore Ravens for Timmy Jernigan, a third round pick, the Jets will be hard pressed to do better than that. There are a lot of factors working against Richardson, and there doesn’t seem to be much interest from teams to acquire him.

According to ESPN New York’s Rich Cimini, there doesn’t appear to be much interest in Richardson. That isn’t surprising news to hear, given the knocks against Richardson and limited market.

The Colts were one option, but signed Johnathan Hankins last week. Cimini reports that the Cowboys and Oakland Raiders are still in the market for a defensive tackle, but may be unable to fit a contract such as Richardson’s into their salary cap.

The Jets could still pull off a trade during the 2017 NFL Draft, but Mike Maccagnan will have a big decision to make. Is it worth flipping Richardson for a late round pick such as a fourth or fifth rounder? If the Jets have no plans on keeping Richardson long-term, getting what they can for him now makes some sense.
