Recent New York Jets rumors are revolving around the quarterback position once again, with the recently released Brian Hoyer being the center of attention.

New York Jets rumors unexpectedly picked up recently with a new quarterback, Brian Hoyer, hitting the open market. Hoyer was someone the Jets were interested in last offseason but he ultimately signed with the Houston Texans, which led to Ryan Fitzpatrick landing with the Jets. Could the Jets, now a year later, get their target in Hoyer?

The standstill between Fitzpatrick and the Jets has been well documented. Fitzpatrick is looking to break the bank after a career season, and seeing players such as Sam Bradford land monster deals he is smart to attempt to. With an asking price supposedly around $15 million, the Jets are waiting him out and offering a little more than half of that, around $8 million. Enter now Hoyer.

Hoyer was recently released by the Houston Texans, as they have their new franchise quarterback in Brock Osweiler. They signed Osweiler to a big contract this offseason, and already have Tom Savage and Brandon Weeden also on the roster so Hoyer became expendable. Once a trade could not be reached, the Texans decided to move on and just release Hoyer.

Hoyer quickly became the top option on a weak quarterback market. The Jets, in additon to the Dallas Cowboys and Pittsburgh Steelers, were immediately available. Hoyer would make for a fine backup quarterback, and for teams such as the Cowboys and Steelers with injury prone quarterbacks in Tony Romo and Ben Roethlisberger, it makes sense to have a legitimate backup option. But, with the Jets, Hoyer could seriously challenge for a starting spot, which every player wants to have.

But, reports have been conflicting recently about just how much interest the Jets have in Hoyer. ESPN New York’s Rich Cimini says the Jets are just doing their due diligence, as Fitzpatrick is still their main target. Hoyer could be looked at later on if the Fitzpatrick talks truly break down, but the Jets already have a backup option on the roster in Geno Smith.

While many fans may not want to see Smith as the starter, there is an argument to be made that he is a stronger candidate for the job at this time than Hoyer. Being five years younger, there is still hope something can be coaxed out of Smith, while you pretty much know what you are going to get with Hoyer.

But, CBS Sports Jason La Canfora reported less than a half hour later that the Jets interest in Hoyer was legitimate. He went as far as to say that a contract could be offered as early as Wednesday. If that were the case it would come as a big surprise, as Cimini’s report is a total 180 from La Canfora’s.

We will have to wait and see what happens with the Jets, as this could all be a smokescreen trying to get Fitzpatrick to accept a lower salary for the 2016 season. There have also been rumors about the Jets wanting to select a quarterback in the draft, which would only complicate things as they already have Smith and Bryce Petty on the roster.

It is a situation to keep an eye on in the coming days as we head into the NFL Draft as the Jets need a quarterback for the upcoming season and also a long-term option as well, which Fitzpatrick nor Hoyer are.
