Yankees Daily Trade Deadline Profile: Billy McKinney
By Sean Dyer
MLB’s non-waiver trade deadline is July 31st. As the New York Yankees appear to be in playoff contention, every day this month we will take a look at a player who could be involved in the Yankees’ deadline activity. These players will either be current Yankees who could be traded away or players from other organizations who New York could look to acquire for the playoff push.
As Brian Cashman scours the trade market, let’s take a look at one of the prospects the Yankees could use to bring in a trade deadline acquisition.
OF Billy McKinney, Scranton Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (AAA), Sell
Billy McKinney should be used to being involved in trade deadline deals by now. The 22-year-old is only in his fifth professional season but has already been traded twice.
McKinney was a first round pick for the Oakland Athletics back in 2013. Oakland then traded the outfielder to the Cubs in the Jeff Samardzija blockbuster in 2014. Chicago then sent McKinney to New York last year in the Aroldis Chapman deal.
Once considered a top prospect, McKinney’s career can be summed up by a constantly packed suitcase.

Could he be on the move again?
After the Yankees-White Sox blockbuster from earlier in the week, Billy McKinney entered MLB.com’s top 30 Yankees prospects.
The outfielder could soon move to another team’s top 30 prospect list if he’s once again moved at the deadline.
One thing that could keep McKinney with the Yanks is if New York fills their remaining needs with Sonny Gray and/or Yonder Alonso. The Athletics moved on from McKinney back in 2014 and it’s unlikely they would want him back in a deal now.
McKinney has hit well this season after struggling in 2016. Between Double-A and Triple-A, McKinney is slashing .266/.344/.465 with ten home runs and 39 RBI. In the 17 games since McKinney’s promotion to Scranton Wilkes-Barre, he has hit .323 with four of those ten homers.
I’ve mentioned many times that the Yankees have a surplus of outfielders in their farm system. Moving a guy like McKinney could help the current Yankees without affecting the future.

Brian Cashman could choose to move any of his many outfielders. However, because of McKinney’s former top prospect status and hot start in Triple-A, he may be the most valuable of the bunch.
Tomorrow we will take a look at one more Yankees outfield prospect who could be on the move at the trade deadline.
