MLB’s non-waiver trade deadline is July 31st. As the New York Yankees appear to be in playoff contention, every day this month we will take a look at a player who could be involved in the Yankees’ deadline activity. These players will either be current Yankees who could be traded away or players from other organizations who New York could look to acquire for the playoff push.

Yesterday, we took a look at a top prospect in the Yankee farm system. Today, we profile a potential trade target for New York.

Although the Yankees’ offense has been one of the best in baseball, they have gotten very little production from their first basemen.

With Greg Bird’s season in question, the Yankees may need to look for external options at the not-so-hot corner.

Oakland’s Yonder Alonso could be a nice addition to New York.

The 30-year-old has found his power stroke this season. Alonso has already blown his previous career-high in home runs (nine) out of the water with 17 homers to date.

Alonso has supplemented those home runs with a .281/.374/.561 slash line and 38 RBIs.

The slugger’s left-handed swing would fit right into Yankee Stadium and his .993 fielding percentage would be an improvement over Chris Carter.

The seventh overall pick in the 2008 MLB Draft, Alonso seems to be putting everything together in his eighth season.

His individual success, however, has not resulted in wins for the A’s. Oakland is in the basement of the AL West with a 35-46 record.

The moneyballers will surely be deadline sellers, with a handful of veterans who could help contending teams.

Brian Cashman should give Billy Beane a call about his All-Star first baseman.

Oakland could ask for a top prospect like shortstop Jorge Mateo in return. However, considering the Yankees’ middle infield depth and potential desire to win this season, Cashman may find that price reasonable.

There are other first basemen potentially on the trade market. We will talk about them in the days to come.

Yonder Alonso, however, is one of the better options out there. He has been one of the best offensive first basemen in the league so far this season.

As good as the Yankees’ offense has been, Alonso could potentially take it to the next level.

Tomorrow we will take a look at another first baseman who the Yankees could target at the trade deadline.
