New York Giants defensive back Janoris Jenkins looks like he avoided serious injury as his tests reportedly came back clean.

The New York Giants are feeling a lot better Monday afternoon than they were Sunday. The team was holding their collective breath as they waited the outcome of Janoris Jenkins‘ test results.

Jenkins was injured from friendly fire against the Detroit Lions Sunday afternoon. Jenkins dove to break up a pass thrown to tight end Eric Ebron. The play was broken up, but Jenkins was kneed in the back by fellow cornerback Trevin Wade.

Jenkins was in visible pain after the play. He was helped to the sideline by a trainer, and was originally diagnosed with a back injury. Jenkins was unable to return to the game after the play, but the nature of the injury became more serious.

The Giants ruled out a back injury of any kind but were nervous that Jenkins had suffered some internal injuries. He underwent a number of tests to rule out internal injuries to his organs, and he received some good news in that regard.

After undergoing tests all Monday, the Giants are optimistic that Jenkins has avoided any serious internal injuries. On Sunday Jenkins texted ESPN’s Josina Anderson and said, “I’m good. I’m fine,” and it seems that he was correct.

A source of Anderson’s also added that the Jenkins were testing for compression fractures in his back in addition to the internal and organ damage.

This is great news for Jenkins and the Giants. Jenkins has been arguably the best signing of the offseason. The Giants signed Jenkins to a five-year, $62.5 million deal early in free agency in hopes that he would help turn around their downtrodden defense. He, along with Olivier Vernon and Damon Harrison, have helped in an overhaul of the Giants defense from worst in the NFL in 2015 to one of the best in 2016.

Jenkins has started all 14 games thus far for the Giants this season. He has been a very durable player in his career as he has missed only four games in his five-year career. His teammates know how tough he is as well.

“He’s tough, man. With the part of Florida he’s from [Pahokee], those boys [are] tough down there,” Jonathan Casillas said after Sunday’s game. “So I expect him to be back. I just don’t know the severity of the injury.”

He seems to have avoided serious injury, but his status for Week 15 is in serious doubt. The Giants have a quick turnaround this week; they play on Thursday Night Football against the Philadelphia Eagles.

It is a big game for the Giants, as they can clinch the top Wild Card seed in the NFC with a victory. They can also keep pressure on the Dallas Cowboys, who need to win one of their last two games to clinch the NFC East division.

If Jenkins has to sit, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie will take over his spot in the starting lineup. Eli Apple would be on the outside opposite Rodgers-Cromartie; the problem will be in the slot. Rodgers-Cromartie has showcased his versatility this season by defending opponents all over the field. But, if Jenkins is unable to play, he will spend a majority of the game on the outside.
