New York Giants cornerback Janoris Jenkins is undergoing tests for internal injuries after being forced from the game against the Detroit Lions.

The New York Giants defense has improved greatly in 2016 from 2015 in large part because of Janoris Jenkins. Along with Olivier Vernon and Damon Harrison, Jenkins was signed as a free agent to turn around the Giants’ fortunes defensively. Things have gone about as well as the Giants had hoped, but they all held their breath on Sunday against the Detroit Lions.

Jenkins was injured against the Lions in the second quarter when he was kneed by his teammate Tevin Wade. Jenkins did not return to the game with what the Giants were calling a back/spine injury.

The injury could actually be much worse for Jenkins. The Giants are now saying that it is not a back injury, and are concerned that he has damage to his organs. Jenkins will undergo a battery of tests to rule out any internal damages according to Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio.

Giants head coach Ben McAdoo had nothing to share in regards to Jenkins’ status following the game. “He took a knee to the back, he’s still being evaluated,” McAdoo said via NJ.com’s James Kratch. “As far as I know, he’s being evaluated.”

Judging from where the injury occurred, it is fair to guess that the Giants will be doing tests on the kidney. Jenkins was kneed in the lower back area, so it makes sense to double check to rule out any serious injury. Jenkins did text ESPN’s Josina Anderson after the game that he was fine, but that remains to be seen.

This would be a devastating blow to the Giants defense if Jenkins is forced to miss time. He has been playing at an All-Pro and Pro Bowl level this season and would be tough to replace.

The Giants have some depth at cornerback, as Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and Eli Apple would take over as the starters. The Giants would then be shorthanded in the slot, where Rodgers-Cromartie has been playing some.

Veteran Leon Hall was originally signed to play the slot but has been forced into safety duty with the injuries the Giants have suffered there. If Jenkins is out, the Giants will have to do some shuffling in their defensive secondary.

On a short week, the Giants could be in some trouble. The Giants go on the road to face the Philadelphia Eagles on Thursday Night Football this week. If there is any concern with Jenkins’ health he will probably be forced to sit out of the game.
