New York Giants: Giants miss mark in Odell Beckham Jr.’s value
By Alex Jordan
New York Giants receiver Odell Beckham Jr. has begun contract negotiations. However, they are on hold after the Giants say he is worth less than $16 million.
The New York Giants and Odell Beckham Jr. have begun negotiations on a contract extension. However, the negotiations are far from over.
According to ESPN’s Josina Anderson, Beckham’s agent, Zeke Sandhu, left New York with no deal done after both sides couldn’t agree on Beckham’s market value.
The Giants are valuing “OBJ” at a average annual value that’s below Kansas City Chiefs receiver Sammy Watkins, whose average annual value is $16 million.

Are you kidding me? How can you value OBJ at less than $16 million? The Giants clearly missed the mark with Odell’s value because he is worth more than $16 million.
Beckham has 288 receptions, 4,122 receiving yards, and 35 touchdowns in his career. Watkins on the other hand has just 153 receptions, 2,459 receiving yards, and 17 touchdowns.
Beckham has set NFL records as he was the fastest player in NFL history to reach 4,000 receiving yards and 200 receptions.
The Giants saying that Beckham is worth less than Watkins is a joke.
Its’s no secret that Beckham wants to be the highest paid receiver in the NFL. Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported on Monday that the Giants are working on a deal that would make OBJ the highest-paid receiver in the league.
Rapoport says that both sides are encouraged that a deal could be done before the season starts.
At a news conference on Saturday, Beckham said he’s optimistic about his contract getting done. He also said, per Ryan Dunleavy of NJ.com:
"“Who doesn’t want to get more money? Everybody does. You just got to be realistic with yourself. You see what happened over the offseason. I can’t really worry about anybody else, just let them figure it out and whenever it happens, it’ll happen.”"
Pittsburgh Steelers receiver Antonio Brown is currently the highest-paid receiver in the league at $17 million a year. Tampa Bay Buccaneers receiver Mike Evans is second at $16.5 million. Sammy Watkins, who is more valuable than OBJ according to Big Blue, is the fifth highest-paid receiver.
I have written before that Beckham deserves to be paid. I also think that OBJ’s value is more than $16 million and should be one of the highest-paid receivers in the NFL.
The Giants should apologize for valuing Beckham as low as they did and reward him with a huge payday because he deserves it.
