The New York Giants selected Will Hernandez with the No. 34 overall pick in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft.

I love the Dave Gettleman era! I can’t tell you how many times I had my hands on my head in disbelief after Jerry Reese passed on a seemingly perfect New York Giants prospect. So far in 2018, however, Big Blue is two-for-two in my book. I’ve already expressed my love for the Saquon Barkley pick and I may love the Will Hernandez pick even more! Gettleman has his “hog mollie“!

After years of Reese neglecting the offensive line, the Giants address their biggest need and get a first-round talent in the second round. When you go 3-13, you should be able to get two first-round talents and Big Blue most certainly did.

More from New York Giants

The Giants took Barkley over Quenton Nelson, the top offensive lineman in the draft, but still land Hernandez, the second-best guard according to some scouts. Pairing Hernandez with recently acquired Nate Solder will solidify the left side of Big Blue’s offensive line and give Barkley room to work his magic.

Hernandez is a powerful guard with a nasty streak. He loves to physically dominate defenders and drive them into the ground. If you look up “hog mollie” in the dictionary, you’ll find Hernandez’s game tape.

If you’ve been following my New York Giants draft coverage, you know that I hope Big Blue also adds another offensive lineman on Friday night. They have two third-round picks, thanks to the Jason Pierre-Paul trade, and could use an offensive tackle to replace Ereck Flowers, a no-show thus far at OTAs. Hopefully, the Giants can trade Flowers for ANY amount of draft pick compensation and replace him with a Tyrell Crosby, Brian O’Neill, or Jamarco Jones.

Dave Gettleman has already sent a message to Giants fans: he will be getting back to New York Giants football. He will be building up a stout offensive line, a strong running game, a hard-nosed defense.

The New York Giants are doing a great job early in this year’s NFL Draft and for an added bonus, I’m two-for-two in my final New York Giants mock draft!
