The New York Giants hold the second overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, and many think that pick should be used on a quarterback. But with the QB’s the G-Men have in-house, why would they do that?

On Thursday, April 26, the New York Giants will have to make a decision that could potentially change the future of the franchise. That decision being who they will pick with their second overall pick, or if they should trade back.

The way I see it, the pick can be used one of three ways. It can be used to draft a quarterback such as Sam Darnold, Josh Rosen, Baker Mayfield or Josh Allen. It can be used to pick Saquon Barkley. Or it can be used to trade back in the first round.

Drafting Saquon Barkley wouldn’t make sense for one reason. That reason being the running back New York drafted last year, Wayne Gallman. Gallman made the most out of the time he was given in 2017, and if he were to be given the starting position, I think he could be a fantastic running back. With that being said, I don’t think drafting Barkley would make sense.

As for the quarterback position, the Giants have Davis Webb who has the potential to be the replacement for Eli Manning after his time is over. Webb is a quarterback who we have never seen play, and for all we know, he could be the franchise quarterback after Manning is done.

In Webb’s final season at Cal, he threw for 4,295 yards and 37 touchdowns. If you do the math, that is an average of a little over three touchdowns and 357 yards per game. Manning threw for over 357 yards and three touchdowns in only two games last year. The fact that Manning was playing against better competition and had no wide receivers almost the entire year has to be taken into account, but still.

If you look at what Webb did in his lone season at Cal you would see that the Giants do not need to draft a quarterback with their second overall pick, because they’ve already got a replacement for Manning.

The only logical outcome for the New York Giants is to trade back in the draft. Trade with a team such as the Cardinals who desperately need a quarterback and take their 15th pick. In doing so, the Cardinals can draft the quarterback they need without having to hope one falls to them at 15. As for the Giants, they likely get a second-round pick this year and next year as well as a first-round pick next year and likely much more.

If the New York Giants were to do this, they would be able to draft an offensive lineman with that 15th pick to finally get some protection for Manning so he doesn’t look much worse than he is.
