The Kansas City Chiefs shocked the NFL on Tuesday night by trading quarterback Alex Smith to the Washington Redskins and the New York Giants stand to benefit.

On Tuesday night, the Kansas City Chiefs and Washington Redskins agreed in principle on a trade that would send quarterback Alex Smith to the nation’s capital, as first reported by Terez A. Paylor of The Kansas City Star. The teams can’t make the trade official under the new league year starts on March 14.

In exchange for Smith, the Chiefs will receive a 2018 third-round pick and slot corner Kendall Fuller. Kansas City also saves $17 million in cap space by moving Smith.

The Redskins look like they’ll be parting ways with their quarterback Kirk Cousins after franchise tagging his the last two seasons.

Washington wasted no time locking Smith up long-term (Smith was entering the final year of his contract). Upon getting traded, Smith signed a four-year, $94 million contract extension. The deal includes a whopping $71 million guaranteed.

The news that Alex Smith had been traded to the Washington Redskins shocked the NFL world and drew plenty of reactions. As for New York Giants fans, they should be happy because they stand to benefit from the blockbuster deal.
