New York Giants: What Can Be Done with Ereck Flowers and the O-Line?
To put it simply, the New York Giants offensive line is absolutely awful, and something needs to change quickly.
Monday night, the New York Giants let the Detroit Lions get to Eli Manning five times, three of which were from Detroit’s Ezekiel Ansah getting past New York offensive lineman Ereck Flowers in a 24-10 Lions win.
In giving up those sacks, and countless other hurries and knockdowns of quarterback Eli Manning, the Giants showed again just how bad Flowers and the rest of the offensive line truly are. So what can be done?
The best analogy for the Giants offensive line is a closed, unlocked door without a knob. All you have to do is push it and you can go wherever you want. The Giants cannot stop anyone and they lost because of that fact.

The Giants offensive line missed Bobby Hart on Monday. Hart went down in the first quarter after reaggravating an ankle injury, which he suffered in week one against Dallas, and he did not return. However, D.J. Fluker did a pretty good job in Hart’s absence.
Much of this blame cannot be put on the entire line, as Ereck Flowers let Ansah get to Eli for three of the Lions five sacks. This was in part because of the fact that he had single coverage on Ansah but that is beside the point.
Something needs to be done with Flowers because Monday night was not the first time this has happened. Since the Giants drafted Flowers with the 9th overall pick in 2015, he has struggled. The Giants just seem to tolerate the fact that he is awful and do nothing to fix it.
Unfortunately, the only thing that can really be done at this point is sitting Flowers and seeing how Chad Wheeler does next week against Philadelphia.
Monday night, after the deflating loss, head coach Ben McAdoo spoke to the press and here is what he had to say, from ESPN:
"“The whole offense needs work. We’re not in rhythm right now. … We have to analyze everything we’re doing. I mean, we can’t pull points out of a hat.”McAdoo said he will consider personnel changes. Asked if he will consider surrendering his playcalling responsibilities, McAdoo said, “We’ll consider everything. Yep.”"
Hopefully, this means the Giants coaching staff will be shuffling around the offensive line and moving Ereck Flowers from left tackle to left bench. If this doesn’t happen, there is a good chance the G-Men may continue to rush for 48.5 yards a game and score just 13 points over the course of two games.
At this rate, the Giants might be able to take the left tackle of their dreams in the 2018 NFL Draft.

If McAdoo does make some serious changes like he was talking about, maybe ten years from now we’ll be celebrating a ten-year Super Bowl anniversary again. After all, that 2007 team that celebrated their ten-year Super Bowl anniversary at halftime on Monday started 0-2 as well.
