The Cleveland Indians and New York Mets made one of the first post non-waiver deadline deals.

The New York Mets have traded outfielder Jay Bruce to the Cleveland Indians.

According to multiple reports, the Mets dealt the slugger to the Indians for pitcher Ryder Ryan. The trade was made official and reported by the teams verified account here

The move is consistent with the rest of the Mets’ moves.

There remains one constant in all the Mets’ deals: trade players with expiring contracts for pitching prospects.

However, the trade has fans scratching their heads.

Ryan is only 22 years young but has been mightily struggling in the minors posting an ERA of

almost 5 this year. It is unlikely that he will see the Major Leagues anytime soon.

The Mets and Indians were in talks prior to the July 31st deadline as they were in discussions to send Asdrubal Cabrera back to Cleveland. Those talk fizzled out, but showed the teams were willing to work together.

The process of the trade was sped up significantly.

The Tribe are desperate for a player like Bruce. Indians outfielder Michael Brantley recently went on the DL and will miss significant time. With the Indians being in a pennant race they need to acquire outfield depth.

Bruce is expected to replace Brantley in the starting lineup.

The urgent need for an outfielder is one of the reasons why the Indians agreed to pay for the

remainder of Bruce’s salary. According to a report by ESPN it is reported to be in the $4.2 million range.

The Mets see no use for Bruce. They can put Curtis Granderson back to his full-time position in the outfield. They can now possibly use Brandon Nimmo more often.

The move appears to be strictly financial, as the team builds for 2018. The move does however open up a roster spot which could be used to call up prized 1st Base prospect Dominic Smith.

Jay Bruce can now go play for a contending team and contribute in the playoffs. If he performs well and keeps his pace he can earn himself a nice pay-day.

As for the Mets, they emphasized their need for young pitching prospects and continue to build towards next season.

Bruce was in good spirits about the trade, and had a classy response, in this letter shared on Twitter.

Theoretically, the Mets can still have a future with Bruce if they choose to resign him. Right now the Mets continue to build for the future.
