EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ - NOVEMBER 27: Quincy Enunwa

The New York Jets suffered a big loss at the wide receiver position. Number one target Quincy Enunwa is set to hit the shelf this season.

One of the few bright spots for the New York Jets in 2016 could miss the entire season.

The Jets announced that they put Quincy Enunwa on the injured reserve list for a neck injury on Monday. According to the Jets, Enunwa will need season-ending surgery on a bulging disk in his neck, which will take six to nine months to make a full recovery.

Adam Schefter also confirmed the injury via Twitter.

The  25-year-old receiver had a strong 2016 campaign with 58 catches for 857 yards. These stats

were in spite of terrible quarterback play, and having to share receptions with veterans Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker.

Last season, Enunwa operated mostly out of the slot, and as a hybrid tight end for the Jets, given that the Jets lacked a receiving tight end especially in the spread offense.

With the team releasing both Decker and Marshall this off-season, it appeared that Enunwa was destined to be the number one receiver on the depth chart.

Now, with Enunwa out of the picture, the Jets will look for young wideouts Robby Anderson, Charone Peake, and Jalin Marshall to step up along with their two rookie wide receivers ArDarius Stewart and Chad Hansen to fill the void.

Todd Bowles was asked on Monday if the team would sign a veteran wide receiver, but all Bowles told reporters was that the team will explore all available options.

New York will now have an even harder time judging their young quarterbacks in Christian Hackenberg and Bryce Petty in 2017. With New York’s top three pass catchers from 2016 now gone fore 2017, the Jets will have a hard time judging their quarterbacks as the lack of receiving talent will make it difficult for whoever is under center during 2017.
