The New York Mets promoted top prospect Amed Rosario on Tuesday. It appears as though the next player they will call up is power-hitting first baseman Dominic Smith.

New York Mets fans were very excited when Amed Rosario finally made his major league debut on Tuesday night in Colorado. One of Rosario’s former teammates with the Las Vegas 51s, Dominic Smith, could soon be joining him in Queens.

After Mets general manager Sandy Alderson announced on Monday that Rosario would be called up, he gave an update on Smith.

According to Anthony DiComo of MLB.com, Alderson said that it will be at least another week before Smith is promoted.

The Mets verified Twitter account confirmed what Alderson said about Smith “not being far behind” Rosario.

The timing makes sense after the Mets made a few moves prior to the trade deadline on Monday. Alderson wanted to wait until the chaos of the deadline was over before calling up his top two prospects.

More from Mets Rumors

After Lucas Duda was traded to the Tampa Bay Rays on Thursday, Smith’s promotion appears to be imminent.

He has definitely performed well enough in Triple-A to justify a call up to the majors. In 106 games with the Las Vegas  51s, Smith is batting .340 with 16 home runs and 72 RBI.

Dominic Smith has been considered a top prospect ever since the Mets selected him with the 11th overall pick in the 2013 MLB Draft. At the time, he was only 17 years old, but Smith has been able to develop nicely in the Mets minor league system over the past four years.

Smith is poised to be a great power-hitting first baseman for many years to come. The 22-year-old lefty is considered one of the best prospects in the MLB at his position. He also ranks as the No. 41 prospect in all of baseball, according to MLB.com.

Not only is he a good offensive player, but Smith is also known as someone who fields his position well. At 6’0″, 239 lb., he has the build of a solid defensive first baseman.
