Another Game, Another Quality Outing for CC Sabathia
Following a brilliant six inning start against the Boston Red Sox last weekend in which he scattered just two hits and allowed no runs, CC Sabathia once again kept opposing hitters in check in the Yankees’ 5-1 win over the Seattle Mariners Friday night.
CC Sabathia, who celebrated his 37th birthday Friday night, pitched five innings of one run baseball, allowing four hits and striking out five batters.
Although he failed to make it into the later innings of the game, Sabathia followed the same formula that has led him to great success this season; putting the Yankees in a position to win each game he starts before turning it over to what is now a very deep bullpen.
Friday’s start was the most recent in what has been a renaissance year full of consistency for the veteran left-hander. Sabathia has allowed one earned run or fewer in nine of his 16 starts in 2017, winning seven of nine games when doing so.

In 89 innings pitched, Sabathia has allowed just 34 earned runs, nine home runs, and has struck out 71 hitters. His win-loss percentage is the fifth-best in the American League at .727, trailing only Jose Berrios, Jason Vargas, James Paxton, and Chris Sale.
More importantly, however, is the fact that the Yankees win as a team when Sabathia takes the mound. They have a 12-4 record in games CC starts, the best by far out of his fellow New York starters.
The Yankees are 9-10 when Masahiro Tanaka starts, 7-11 when Jordan Montgomery starts, 10-9 when Luis Severino takes the hill and were 10-7 when Michael Pineda started prior to his injury.
CC Sabathia continues to make great start after great start and, in addition to his numbers, has been able to give the Yankees a chance to win in all but a few of his outings.
He may not have the velocity he once had, but his control is as good as ever and he’s been just as valuable to the Yankees as All-Star Luis Severino.

Now, with a revamped bullpen that is arguably the deepest unit in all of baseball, Sabathia gives the Yankees an even greater chance of winning every five days, and that’s the stat that matters most.
