MLB’s non-waiver trade deadline is July 31st. As the New York Yankees appear to be in playoff contention, every day this month we will take a look at a player who could be involved in the Yankees’ deadline activity. These players will either be current Yankees who could be traded away or players from other organizations who New York could look to acquire for the playoff push.

The past couple days we’ve been focusing on improving the first base position. Today, let’s take a look at a reliever who could help lock down leads.

The Yankees have struggled of late, and it hasn’t been because of poor first base production. New York has lost 14 of 20 because of their struggling bullpen.

In turn, Brian Cashman’s top priority at the trade deadline may end up being bullpen help.

While Cashman is on the phone with Billy Beane talking about Yonder Alonso, he should see what Oakland wants in return for Ryan Madson.

Through 32.2 innings pitched, Madson has an ERA of 2.48 and a 31-6 strikeout to walk ratio.

Those numbers have resulted in 13 holds and a save for Madson.

The Yankees’ current seventh inning man, Tyler Clippard, has been a big problem.

Despite showing improvement his last few times out, overall Clippard has not been effective.

Madson could take over Clippard’s seventh inning role and form a nice bullpen trio with Dellin Betances and Aroldis Chapman. That’s assuming Betances and Chapman can get back on track.

Madson is 36-years-old, so the A’s won’t be able to ask for top prospects in return.

He also is signed through 2018 at just $7.5 million per year, so he could be the Yankees’ seventh inning guy next season as well. Clippard is a free agent following the 2017 season.

With one of the deepest farm systems in baseball, the Yankees could send Oakland a few of their mid-level prospects in exchange for Madson.

Brian Cashman and Joe Girardi need to figure out their bullpen because recently, no matter who Girardi goes to, it has been a mess.

We will get into a few other relievers who could be available at the deadline throughout the month. However, Ryan Madson, considering his production and price tag, could be one the Yankees’ better options.

With our next profile, we will go back into the Yankees’ organization and look at one of their hottest hitters at Double-A Trenton.
