The New York Giants will be taking on the Dallas Cowboys in an extremely important Week 7 matchup. The Giants will be catching a break when their NFC East rivals visit MetLife Stadium, as they will still be without wide receiver Dez Bryant Sunday afternoon.

Bryant was originally listed as doubtful for the game on Friday when injury reports were first released, but was downgraded to out for the game this weekend. The Cowboys were holding out hope that Bryant would be able to return from his foot injury, but it will be at least another week until he is on the field.

Bryant originally injured the foot against the Giants in season opener, and hasn’t played since. The Cowboys offense has been a bit of a mess since then, as they lost quarterback Tony Romo the next week to a collarbone injury and haven’t won since. They are riding a three-game losing streak coming out of their bye week, losing to the Atlanta Falcons, New Orleans Saints and New England Patriots.

Bryant did not fly with the team to New Jersey when they departed on Friday, which was a poor indication for his chances to play. While he may not be suiting up, he is expected to be on the sidelines during the game Sunday. This will be the fifth consecutive week that he is out, as the Cowboys cannot wait to get their top receiver back onto the field.

That could come next week, as Bryant was ramping up his activity during practice this past week. He wasn’t able to partake in full team activities, but was working on the side in drills that included some running and cutting, which is an encouraging sign. The Cowboys will be facing off with the Seattle Seahawks at AT&T Stadium next weekend.

This is a big break for the Giants, as they are getting healthier this week but will still be without Prince Amukamara in the secondary. With Bryant not being able to take the field, it will take a lot of pressure of Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, who would have more than likely needed to shadow Bryant. But, with him now sidelined, the Giants can focus more on the defense as a whole instead of just one player.

It will also benefit the Giants because the Cowboys will be working in a new quarterback with a less than scary supporting cast. Matt Cassel will be under center for the first time as a Cowboy, so having their best receiver on the field would have helped. Without Bryant, Cassel will now have to rely on Terrance Williams, Cole Beasley and Brice Butler on the outside with the ever reliable Jason Witten in the middle. If the Giants can slow down Witten and stuff the run as they have thus far this season, the Cowboys offense could be in for a long day.

That is exactly what the Giants are hoping for, as this is a game they need to win. Losing the first week of the season to the Cowboys, the Giants can ill afford to lose to them again if they want to keep pace in the NFC East race.

That task became a little bit easier with Bryant being ruled out, as the Cowboys offense will lack one of the most talented and explosive players in the NFL, and one that seems to always bring his best game against the Giants.
