New York Giants Lose Nat Berhe For The Season To Calf Surgery

Coming into the week, things were finally looking up for the New York Giants in the secondary. There were still a lot of injuries, but the Giants were getting better with Nat Berhe and rookie Landon Collins coming back to practice. While Collins is on pace to play against the New York Jets this weekend in the Giants’ regular season rehearsal, they will be without Berhe once again, and potentially for the season.

Berhe had originally injured his calf sometime in the Spring, but had rehabbed enough to get on the field this week. He only lasted one practice though before he reaggravated the injury, and he now looks like he will be out for the season as he is opting for surgery.

Berhe is potentially the fourth Giants safety that will be out for the season. Mykkele Thompson ruptured his Achilles in the Giants’ first preseason game, then undrafted rookie Justin Currie fractured his ankle in the second preseason game. He was joined by second year safety Bennett Jackson, who tore his ACL late in the fourth quarter of the second preseason game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Jackson had made a successful transition from cornerback and looked like he was going to have a real role on the defense this season, but instead will miss his second straight season.

Heading into this offseason, Berhe was expected to have an expanded role on the Giants defense after playing mostly on special teams as a rookie. He is thought to have the best coverage ability of the group of safeties the Giants have, with his skill set best suited to play a centerfield type role next to a heavy hitter such as Collins.

But, that is a combination we will not see, at least for this season as Berhe is most likely out for the season. Collins is healthy enough to get back in the field now, but the question remains as to who will play next to him. Berhe and Jackson were considered the early front runners, but the Giants will more than likely have to turn to players such as Jeromy Miles or Brandon Meriweather, both of whom weren’t even on the roster heading into training camp.

The Giants are now once again left in a quandary in their secondary. Berhe was expected to have a role in the defense, but now they will have to fill the void he is leaving along with his three other safety teammates. The Giants will more than likely have to bring in another veteran as they try to piece together the last line of their defense.
