New York Giants Rumors: There have been plenty of rumors swirling around defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul, with the latest being that he is only being offered a one-year deal from the Giants.

The New York Giants have an extremely important offseason that is quickly approaching. Flush with a boatload of cap space, it is up to Jerry Reese to hit a home run in free agency to turn around a roster that was barren of much talent or depth in the last few seasons.

One of the areas that Reese must address is the defensive line, specifically the pass rush. The backbone of the Giants’ organization has always been a pass rush, getting pressure on the quarterback without needing to send extra players on a blitz. They won their Super Bowls with that in mind, as greats such as Lawrence Taylor, Michael Strahan, Justin Tuck, Osi Umenyiora and Jason Pierre-Paul terrorized quarterbacks en route to championships.

Pierre-Paul is actually in the middle of the Giants quest for pass rush help. After franchise tagging him last season, Pierre-Paul badly damaged his right hand in a Fourth of July fireworks incident. It left him with little functionality in his hand, and he missed half of the season.

Despite the damage done to his hand, Pierre-Paul still graded out positively according to Pro Football Focus; he ranked 30th out of 91 qualified defensive ends. But, it was evident that Pierre-Paul was limited because of the injuries sustained to his hand. He was unable to finish plays and shed tackles on a consistent basis as he has little to no use of his right hand.

That was part of the reason that rumors swirled earlier in the month that the Giants were prepared to let Pierre-Paul walk as a free agent. If Pierre-Paul is intent on trying to maximize his earnings and land a long-term contract, it will be on the market as the Giants do not seem prepared to give him that.

The most recent rumor though was that the Giants in fact wanted to keep Pierre-Paul, and were even working hard on a contract to get him signed before the free agent period begins. It was quite a turnaround from earlier in February, but makes sense on the surface. The Giants need pass rushing help, so why would they allow arguably their best one to walk for nothing?

More from Giants Rumors

More rumors have popped up now regarding Pierre-Paul as teams were at the NFL Scouting Combine discussing some free agents. According to Jordan Raanan of NJ.com, the Giants are in fact interested in bringing back Pierre-Paul, but only on a one-year, prove it type of deal. He also adds that if Pierre-Paul can land something more lucrative on the open market, than he is more than likely gone.

Why did Raanan add that? Because according to what he is hearing, there is a belief among the people in Pierre-Paul’s group that he can land not only a multi-year contract, but one that would pay him upwards of $10 million annually.

While that is hard to imagine at this point, as there is so much uncertainty surrounding Pierre-Paul’s hand, if he is offered anything close to that his time with the Giants is probably over. The Giants do not seem comfortable at this time committing long-term, big money to Pierre-Paul despite all of the money they have; it would not be a smart decision with the current state of the rest of the roster.

The Giants will undoubtedly attempt to re-sign Pierre-Paul it sounds like, but as it always is with Big Blue, it will have to be on their terms. Pierre-Paul will be allowed to test the market, but if he doesn’t find what he is looking for the Giants will be more than happy to bring him back.
