New York Giants Hurt Themselves Continually In Loss vs. Eagles

The New York Giants came into their Monday Night Football matchup with the Philadelphia Eagles in first place in the NFC East. They will not be leaving it as the sole holders of that lead, as they continually shot themselves in the foot against their NFC East rivals, losing 27-7.

It didn’t look like it would be that way at the onstart, as the Giants offense came out roaring. They went 80 yards on their first drive to go up 7-0 early. After holding the Eagles to a three-and-out, the Giants looked poised to go in for another score but then everything unraveled.

Eli Manning threw a pass to Larry Donnell, who looked like he was going to secure the pass but had the ball ripped out of his hands by DeMeco Ryans. From that point on, the Giants were never able to get anything going again.

They began hurting themselves with penalties following that drive. The Giants had the Eagles punting once again, but Damontre Moore committed one of the dumber penalties you will ever see, as he performed a piledriver on Sam Bradford to keep the Eagles drive alive. They took advantage and went down the field for a touchdown, tying the game at seven.

That was only the beginning for the Giants, who continued to shoot themselves in the foot throughout the night. They committed 12 penalties on the evening for 92 total yards, plenty of which kept Eagles drives alive. They ran into the punter once that kept their defense on the field, and each time the Giants gave them a chance the Eagles would capitalize.

It was also a turnover filled game, as both teams struggled to hold onto the ball. The Giants committed three turnovers, as Manning threw two interceptions and Rashad Jennings lost a fumble. For the Eagles, Bradford threw three interceptions and Jordan Matthews fumbled.

The Giants offensive line struggled mightily as well. Coming into the game, Manning had been sacked only four times in five games; tonight he was sacked four times alone and hit many other times. He was called for multiple intentional grounding penalties and just never got time in the pocket after that Donnell catch turned interception as the Eagles defensive front run roughshod through the Giants offensive line. Marshall Newhouse especially struggled, as the unit had their worst game of the season.

Overall it was a sloppy game for both teams, as neither will leave the field especially happy. But, the Eagles will certainly leave it feeling better, as they now move into a tie for first place in the NFC East, technically being first as the Eagles now own the head-to-head tiebreaker. If the NFC East wasn’t wide open before this week, it is now clear that this is a division up for grabs for any team that resides in it.
