New York Knicks News: The Knicks brought back a fan favorite from last season, re-signing power forward/center Lou Amundson to a one-year deal worth slightly above the minimum.

The New York Knicks continue to round out the end of their roster, as they brought back another player from their team last year in Louis Amundson. Amundson and the Knicks agreed to a one-year, $1.65 million deal according to Amundson’s agent Mark Bartelstein.

Amundson was acquired in the three-team trade last season along with Lance Thomas and Alex Kirk that invovled the Oklahoma City Thunder and Cleveland Cavaliers. Like the other two, Amundson was waived shortly after the trade so that his contract would not become guaranteed. It eventually became guaranteed though, as Amundson, like Thomas, earned two 10-day contracts and then received a contract through the remainder of the season.

Like Thomas, Amundson was someone that head coach Derek Fisher spoke highly of. He praised his demeanor and professionalism throughout his time with the team despite the ugly record that the Knicks compiled.

In 41 games with the Knicks last season, Amundson compiled 4.9 points and 5.1 rebounds a game to go with 1.6 assists and 1.3 blocks in only 20.9 minutes per game. He is the ultimate hustle player, as he does all of the little things some players aren’t willing to do night in and night out, let alone every minute they are on the court.

He was a pleasant surprise for the Knicks last season, as he quickly took over a starting spot with the intangibles he brought to the court. Amundson set career highs it seemed constantly with the Knicks scoring and on the boards, with his most impressive outing coming against the San Antonio Spurs. He finished the game with a career-high 17 rebounds and 12 points with two assist and two blocks to help the Knicks to the upset win.

With Amundson now under contract with a guaranteed deal, the Knicks have 11 players under contract. There are two more with partial deals in Langston Galloway and Ricky Ledo, leaving the Knicks with two available spots currently. Galloway is expected to make the final roster, but Ledo’s spot is not as concrete so the Knicks could have anywhere from 2-4 spots left on the roster.

With the additions the Knicks have already made though, Amundson will probably not receive as much playing time as he did last season. But, he is a solid player to have the end of the bench. If Fisher is ever in a pinch and has to go down deep in his bench, he will know what he will be getting from Amundson. That is always a nice luxury for a coach to have, as he knows the system and showed that he can fit in well.
