The biggest hole on this New York Yankees team has come with the relief pitching unit as injuries have kept the group from staying consistent. This made it all the more shocking that the Yankees chose to option relief pitcher Ron Marinaccio back to Triple-A to bring up reliever Nick Burdi who's returning from injury.

This season Marinaccio has been incredible after a down year in 2023 as he has a 1.42 ERA across nine appearances this season. The demotion marks the seventh time that Marinaccio has been sent down by the team, a mark that disappointed Marinaccio.

The Yankees' decision to send down Marinaccio of all pitchers does feel odd given some of the other players currently on the roster. Mets castoff Michael Tonkin is on the roster and while he's been good in his 5 innings pitched, this is also his third team this season. Dennis Santana has been good this season however, results wise you'd likely take Marinaccio.

The Yankees will certainly call Marinaccio up again at some point but, the constant up and down may lead to friction between the team and the player. If Marinaccio is already voicing his displeasure this could lead to a potential parting of ways come the trade deadline. For now it's a nice issue to have as the Yankees had to demote someone that was performing well but, for a local player in Marinaccio you hope it pans out.

The Yankees bullpen is only going to undergo more and more changes as pitchers begin to return from the injured list. The Yankees may end up getting Gerrit Cole, Tommy Kahnle, and Scott Effross back at some point this season meaning that we'll likely see three pitchers depart from the team. This is before considering any players the Yankees may look to add at the trade deadline to bolster this team's playoff hopes. The bullpen may look completely different by the time the summer reaches its peak which is important to remember early on in the season.
