The Yankees got uncompromising news when they learned that newly acquired infielder/outfielder Jazz Chisholm Jr. would hit the 10-day injured list with a left elbow sprain.

While Chisholm Jr. will miss a significant amount of time, the Yankees may have dodged a bullet, as the former All-Star may not need UCL surgery and has the chance to return next month.

Chisholm Jr. looked like the best trade deadline acquisition this year as he immediately sparked New York's offense, hitting four home runs in his first three games as a Yankee. The 26-year-old can play multiple positions and was starting to look very comfortable as a third baseman. His addition was a shrewd move by the Yankees, who will have Chisholm Jr. under control for another two seasons after this year.

While Jazz's injury could've been a lot worse, and he could return this season, the Yankees need all the help they can get as they make a playoff push and hope to win the division.

Yankees Should Add 3B Gio Urshela After Jazz Chisholm Injury

With Chisholm Jr. injured for at least a month, we can expect D.J. LeMahieu, Oswaldo Cabrera, and Oswald Peraza to get reps at third base, but they may have more help on the way in a familiar face. The Yankees are in Detroit this weekend for a three-game series with the Tigers, and the timing could not be more perfect.

The Tigers announced on Friday afternoon that they had designated Gio Urshela for assignment, making him available to be claimed off waivers by Sunday. Urshela is owed about $353,000 of his $1.5 million contract, which he signed with the Tigers before the season.

Urshela played third base for the Yankees from 2019 to 2021 and was a fan favorite in New York. The veteran put up his career-best offensive numbers during that time. He played exceptionally well in 2019, helping the Yankees to an ALCS appearance.

Urshela had career-highs in batting average (.314), home runs (21), RBI (74), and OPS (.889). In his three seasons in New York, Urshela slashed .292/.335/.480 with 41 home runs, 139 runs, 153 RBI, and 296 hits.

The Yankees traded Urshela to the Minnesota Twins before the 2022 season in exchange for Josh Donaldson, Isaiah Kiner-Falefa, and Ben Rortvedt, who are all no longer with the organization. The trade may not have worked out for the Yankees years later, but New York will now have the chance to redeem themselves for it.

With Urshela's inexpensive contract and his prior experience playing in the Bronx, he makes a lot of sense for the Yankees this year. The Yankees should reunite with Urshela and give him a second chance at competing for a championship and bringing home another World Series to the Big Apple.
