It has not been a great week yet so far for New York Yankees fans. They're already lost to their AL East rival Baltimore Orioles, who have stopped them from clinching the AL East. Even worse, they just received shocking injury news. The Yankees have announced that left-handed starter Nestor Cortes would land on the 15-day injured list with a left elbow strain.

This news came hours before he was scheduled to start yesterday against the Orioles. This is a huge blow to the starting rotation. Marcus Stroman got the start for him and took the loss. Luckily, the team has the depth to cover Nestor's spot in the rotation. As part of the corresponding move, they have decided to call up Cody Poteet.

Though the Yankees did not rule out an October return for him, the ALDS is probably out of the question. If the team does advance to the ALCS, then there's a good chance that Cortes will make his return to the rotation. Before Nestor makes his way back, there are things he has to do first. One of them is to build up and get comfortable.

Obviously, the Yankees want Cortes fresh for his starts if that day even comes.

Nestor Cortes's Injury is Mind-Blowing News for Yankees Fans

According to Yankees manager Aaron Boone, "That's one of the things that stinks about this too is just how well he's throwing the baseball right now."

Indeed, Boone is right. The injury news to Cortest came at the wrong time. New York cannot be losing any more players to injuries. That has been one of the reasons why New York has not gotten far in the playoffs in previous years. Staying healthy is crucial for making a World Series run, so here's hoping Cortes gets back quickly.
