The Yankees Could Land This Starting Pitcher Before the Deadline

The New York Yankees desperately need starting pitching help at this year's deadline. They have shown interest in this starting pitcher, who would be considered a vital role in the Yankees' postseason plans should they make a deep run.

The New York Yankees need pitching help and are in the market for another arm at this year's deadline. New York's pitching has a 3.69 ERA this season and could use help from the bullpen and in their rotation. The Yankees must think long-term about who they will start throughout the postseason, and it's pretty clear they will look mainly to ace Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodon, but they could use a third reliable option as they hope to make a deep playoff run.

The Yankees have been linked to several names at this year's deadline, including Jameson Taillon, Tanner Scott, Peter Fairbanks, and even Blake Snell. Still, as of late Monday afternoon, they had shown interest in Detroit Tigers' starter Jack Flaherty. According to USA Today's Bob Nightengale, the Yankees and Tigers have been in extensive talks, and New York plans to move starting pitcher Nestor Cortes.

Yankees News: New York and Detroit Tigers in Talks for Jack Flaherty

This doesn't necessarily mean Cortes will be dealt in this trade, but it does mean the Yankees need to be more confident in him and are in the market for another starting pitcher they could trust to get them through the next two months of the season and beyond. Cortes has struggled this season with a 4-9 record, a 4.13 ERA, and a 1.21 WHIP in 22 starts.

The left-hander is 29 years old and will become an unrestricted free agent in 2026. He was an All-Star two seasons ago, but his numbers have plummeted since then, which is not to say a smaller market team can't help him get his stuff back, as he could headline a package for the Yankees.

The Yankees have already acquired infielder/outfielder Jazz Chisholm Jr. this year, whom New York will have control of for the remainder of this season and two more years. However, Brian Cashman can not be done if the team wants to contend for a championship. Flaherty makes a lot of sense for the Yankees, as he has had a phenomenal year with the Tigers but will be a free agent following this season.

The Tigers right-hander has a 2.95 ERA over 18 starts this season and is the fifth-best in strikeout rate and seventh-lowest in walk rate of any pitcher who has thrown more than 100 innings. His 0.96 WHIP is tied for the fourth-best in Major League Baseball and has a 7-5 record. The Tigers scratched him from his start against the Guardians on Monday, meaning he will likely be dealt. Let's hope Flaherty's next team is the Yankees, and he'll be able to don the pinstripes for the remainder of the season as they strive for the 28th World Series title.
