Odell Beckham Reveals How Jets Fumbled Signing Him Last Offseason
By Jovan Alford
Veteran wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. is having a solid season with the Baltimore Ravens after missing the 2022 campiagn. However, did you know that Beckham could’ve been playing in the Big Apple for the second time in his career instead?
Beckham was a guest on the Punch Line Podcast, which is hosted by his Ravens teammate Marlon Humphrey, where he discussed his free agency journey.
The veteran wideout said to Humphrey and his co-host, “In my heart, I was set to go back to New York and be a Jet.” Beckham also discussed how the Ravens approached him during the process and asked him, “What is it gonna take for you to not take that visit?”
During the conversation, the star receiver said that he was “setting stones” as if he was going to the Jets. But Beckham Jr. said the Jets slow played the offer and thought they had it in the bag.
Nonetheless, it was interesting to hear Beckham discuss how his free agency played out and see that the Jets were in the running to sign him.
Could you imagine how much better the Jets’ offense could have been with Beckham Jr. playing opposite second-year wide receiver Garrett Wilson?
Ultimately, it might’ve not mattered as the Jets lost starting QB Aaron Rodgers in Week 1 to a season-ending injury and refused to upgrade the quarterback position to give themselves a chance to make the playoffs. Even with Zach Wilson under center, I don't believe Beckham Jr. would've made a huge impact in New York, as the Jets' offensive line was terrible this season.
However, we know Beckham would’ve been better than Allen Lazard and Randall Cobb, who scored two total touchdowns in 2023. Meanwhile, the 31-year-old Beckham has 35 receptions (64 receptions) for 565 yards and three touchdowns with the Ravens.
