New York Giants Jockeying With the Cowboys for Top NFL Draft Prospect
As the NFL Draft slowly approaches, we're starting to see which teams are interested in which players as teams are hosting prospects on Top-30 Visits. The Giants are reportedly interested in Florida State running back Trey Benson whom the Cowboys have hosted on a top-30 visit.
Could Benson be the Giants' Long Term Plan at Running Back?
Trey Benson is one of the top running backs in the class coming off of back-to-back second-team All-ACC seasons. Benson is coming off of an incredible year rushing for 905 yards with 14 touchdowns on 156 carries in a split backfield for a better part of the season.
ESPN has Benson ranked as the 57th-ranked player in the draft, while PFF ranks him as the 87th-ranked player, and Tankathon ranks him 66th in the class. If the Giants want to draft Benson they'll need to either reach and take him with the 47th pick in the draft or trade up from the 70th pick in the draft unless Benson slides.
Trey Benson is a home run hitter as shown with his 4.39 forty-yard dash at the combine. Benson loves to bounce runs outside sometimes making the wrong decision but, it also leads to incredible plays. He's got the power to be great as well, averaging 4 yards after contact which you love to see in a back with Benson's speed. In the NFL, you'd like to see more out of Benson in the receiving game as he recorded 227 yards on 20 catches with a touchdown with a reception of 80 yards.
The Giants addressed the departure of Saquon Barkley by signing Devin Singletary to a two-year deal in all likelihood as a bridge option until the team finds its future back.
Adding Trey Benson would give the team a home run hitter in the backfield bringing back the big play ability the Barkley had. We could certainly see the Giants drafting Benson while signing a third receiving back going running back by committee in 2024.
The New York Giants are currently significant underdogs (+900) to win the NFC East next season. They need to nail their draft decisions to have a chance against their division rivals.
