Knicks Break the Bank in Massive OG Anunoby Extension
Not long after acquiring star Mikal Bridges in a blockbuster trade, the Knicks made another stunning deal. On Wednesday, it was announced that OG Anunoby intends on re-signing with the New York Knicks for five years worth $212.5 million per Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.
Anunoby did decline a $19.9 million player option and officially became an unrestricted free agent earlier in the week. He was acquired by the Knicks in a trade along with Precious Achiuwa and Malachi Flynn in exchange for RJ Barrett and Immanuel Quickley.
Knicks News: OG Anunoby Re-Signs in New York
OG is coming off a solid season in NY where he has averaged 14.7 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game. He missed 32 games during the regular season due to an elbow injury that required him to get surgery. It gets even worse. During New York's second-round series against the Indiana Pacers, Anunoby sustained a hamstring injury that left no choice but to sit out until game seven. He only played for five minutes before the Knicks got eliminated by the Pacers in a blowout loss.
New York went 20-3 with Anunoby on the floor last season. That just shows what kind of difference-maker he has been when he was on the court.
With his contract extension already a done deal, there are still other questions that need to be answered. Do the Knicks still have enough space to bring back Isaiah Hartenstein? That seems less likely now. The only way they can bring him back is if they free up some cap space, which could mean parting ways with Mitchell Robinson or another player under contract.
