Bad attitude continues as a pro

Last season, Baker looked overmatched during the first 10 contests. It looked like the receivers he defended were playing at a higher level than he could reach. Many thought his struggles were due to his slow learning curve at the start of his career.

In November, Big Blue Nation found out the real reason for his struggles. New leaked that the team’s veterans got on Baker about his poor habits. They felt like he wasn’t working hard enough, and his lack of effort was hurting the team. Baker even fell asleep during a team meeting. After the confrontation, his play improved significantly.

With time off, it’s back to the status quo. Baker hadn’t attended the online meetings and workouts the team has run this spring since the NFL eased some of its COVID-19 restrictions. For someone reported to have come up the hard way, it’s unfathomable to think he would be so callous with a golden opportunity.

More from New York Giants

There were many warning signs about Deandre Baker leading up to the 2019 NFL draft. His character was a big reason why he dropped like a rock on national television. Other teams were not going to give first-round money, especially guaranteed money, to a player they had serious doubts about. Not only did the New York Giants select him when they shouldn’t have, but their general manager also traded up into the first round to do so.

There was a disconnect somewhere in the team’s process. When Dave Gettleman had his mea culpa moment during the “Pat Shurmer was canned” press conference, he said he needed to do better as a GM. This Deandre Baker debacle is a prime example. Giants fans can only hope the team’s revamped scouting process, announced at the same presser, addressed issues just like this.
