Digging a hole

What really pisses me off as I write this, is that I have to defend Jones here. For the record, I don’t think he should have been selected sixth or even 17th in the first round by the New York Giants. In my opinion, the G-Men should have traded with Arizona for Josh Rosen. I have been quite vocal in that regard.

The situation is what it is and Jones is now the heir apparent to Eli Manning. For that reason, as hard as it is for me to stomach, the 22-year-old deserves the support of Big Blue Nation. As much as I hate what Gettleman did and the aftermath, I hope I’m dead wrong about all of this.

For the franchise’s sake, they need Jones to be the second coming of, well, Eli Manning. I can’t think of a better tutor for any quarterback. Number 11’s work ethic and commitment to the job is virtually unparalleled. Sitting in a film room with Manning is like taking a Master’s class in reading defenses. As a former Duke player and protege of QB guru David Cutcliffe, I expect that to be the least of Jones’ problems.

More from New York Giants

Speaking of problems, what happened to Jones at Yankee Stadium underlines a huge mismanagement issue. Gettleman has put the team’s top pick in a very difficult situation. By insisting Jones was the best quarterback in the draft and had to be picked sixth, no question.

That was absolutely false. GMDG put the kid behind the eight-ball to start his career in a very tough city, to begin with. The fans hate him and Jones hasn’t taken a snap in NFL action yet.

Already on his plate are things such as: Adjusting to the faster paced NFL from college. Learning the Giants playbook. Being a 22-year-old kid, who is trying to work his way into leadership. Add to it, his shortsighted GM has made sure, by his own misguided actions and comments, the fanbase hates him.

That’s a deep hole for Jones climb out of. Especially for someone that didn’t play at a big football school under intense scrutiny. A manager’s job is to put his employees in positions to succeed. Its the difference between being a good boss and a bad one.

One more thing. The fact that Jones’ teammates and coaches have to come to his defense once again, without ever having played a down in the league, is a ridiculous situation. How is he supposed to inspire confidence and lead the offense a year or two from now?

If New York Giants fans want to boo someone, boo Dave Gettleman. He drafted Jones and then dropped him into this abyss. All the QB did was show up and say the right things.
