New York Giants: Post-draft defensive backs breakdown
In the trade that sent Odell Beckham Jr. to Cleveland, the team got a defensive playmaker in Jabrill Peppers who should be a huge asset.
Jabrill Peppers is everything both Gettleman, head coach Pat Shurmur, and Bettcher could ask for in a player. He is one of the most versatile defensive backs in the entire league who will instantly make this defense better. The G-Men would not have done the OBJ trade with Cleveland if Peppers wasn’t included in the deal.

In case you weren’t sure just how much Bettcher loves Peppers as a player. He actually flew to Ann Arbor, Michigan before Peppers was drafted to meet with him. In an interview with Giants.com, the DC spoke enthusiastically about his new safety,
"“I thought he was a dynamic kid and the people that were around him loved him,” Bettcher said. “I got multiple texts from coaches that worked with him in Cleveland and it was not something I asked for; this was after we traded for him and they said that we were going to love him. He is going to work exceptionally hard and is going to be about what it is supposed to be about. You see him out here, we are doing stuff against the air and he is moving, sliding and running around. He is in a stance and sometimes you want to be like, slow down, this is on air. He is exciting.”"
Peppers can play in a variety of defensive schemes and coverage packages. He can return punts as well. The Giants have lacked a true punt returner for a few seasons now even employing Odell Beckham Jr. and Saquon Barkley for the job at times.
Luckily for fans who hated seeing their star yardage makers risk injury just to call for a fair catch, it looks like Peppers may be handling a good portion of returns. It remains to be seen however the extent Bettcher allows his prized safety play on special teams.
