The team added Olsen Pierre, a guy who thrived under defensive coordinator’s James Bettcher’s system while in Arizona.

While the New York Giants didn’t trade for a defensive lineman, they certainly dealt a big name away. Olivier Vernon’s time with the Giants never fully lived up to its potential. Gettleman decided it was time to move on from Vernon, and his large contract. He flipped the pass rusher to Cleveland for one of the best guards in the league, Kevin Zeitler.

More from New York Giants

The Giants did not added any big name free agent pass rushers this offseason. Instead, defensive coordinator James Bettcher turned to Olsen Pierre, a former Cardinals defensive end who thrived under Bettcher’s system.

The New Jersey native teams up with Bettcher once again after having a lackluster season that was cut short due to a knee injury. He joins other former Cardinals’ teammates, safety Antoine Bethea, and linebacker Markus Golden on the Big Blue defense.

With the addition of Lawrence, Pierre drops on the depth chart and will have to impress coaches to earn playing time beyond special teams.

While the middle of the D-Line appears to be set, adding another defensive end is not out of the question. Gettleman will likely wait until cuts are made by other teams on June 1, or during training camp to see who can help the G-Men on the outside of the line.
