New York Giants draft profile of Rashan Gary
By Ed Stein
Negatives
Scouts have varying opinions of Gary because he has been inconsistent over his collegiate career. Part of that has to do with injury and the other part is his attitude. They believe he is inconsistent and doesn’t go full out often enough. His work ethic is also in question.
Getting back to the shoulder injury, apparently, it isn’t healed. Reports that came out on Tuesday said Gary has a torn labrum. It could keep him from starting camp with his team and may even force Gary to miss a few games. Actually, that can also be a positive. When you think about it, Gary did 22 reps of 220 with a torn labrum. That’s guts.

How much of the former is affected by the latter is unknown? Additionally, Walter Football’s report said he can be more disruptive than productive. At the NFL level talent isn’t enough, so this is something the New York Giants scouting department has to thoroughly investigate.
Although Gary can get to the quarterback fast, he has a limited move set. Offensive linemen in the NFL level are much better than in college. If he got tied up too often with college tackles, this is going to be an issue. Even when he does beat the tackle to the outside, Gary has problems bending around his blocker to reach the QB.
This one comes down to how well the New York Giants could coach him up once he gets to New York. Not ideal for such a high pick. If Gary’s injury causes him to drop much further than expected, he might be available when the G-Men pick again at 17.
