Allonzo Trier has been the biggest surprise in the New York Knicks season so far. But, what does he have to do to get a contract?

I have to first apologize for judging New York Knicks guard Allonzo Trier way too early. I had my doubts about him, and I have truly been proven wrong.

When you have some free time, please take a look a website called “Spot Trac.”

It is a very interesting website that dives into the details of athlete’s contracts. Very easy to get lost on the website.

Here is what Trier’s page shows.

I can’t imagine Trier is making no money with the team, but he doesn’t have a contract signed with the Knicks, and that is treasonous.

With that, Trier had his best game of the season vs. the Pistons on Tuesday night, going for 24 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists.

His Game Score for last night was 23.2. Game Score is like PER, but here is a more accurate definition:

"This statistic was invented by John Hollinger to provide a rough measure of a player’s performance in a given game.  The scale upon which the player’s game score is based is the same as points scored.  If a player has a game score of 40, that is amazing, while a game score of 10 is average."

Having a Game Score of 23.2, for an unsigned rookie is extremely rare.

The other eye-popping stat is the seven assists.

With the “Iso Zo” nickname, it’s hard to believe that he would be a solid passer when he chooses to.

I frequently wrote about my concerns on Trier. Watching him at Arizona, not looking to pass to anyone on his team, was a call for concern. Especially when he had Lauri Markkanen on the team with him.

However, Trier has proved me wrong.

He can create shots when he chooses, grab rebounds, and facilitate an offense. He is in the top half of the roster in every major category, and looks better every night.

So, what is it going to take for the Knicks to give him a contract? There isn’t an answer.

Fizdale seems to be trying new lineups every night to see what works. Night in and night out, Trier answers the call, and contributes.

If Yogi Ferrell can go from a two-way contract, to a guaranteed contract with the Mavericks two years ago, there is no reason a more talented Trier can’t get one.

Knowing James Dolan, we may have to wait a while for the contract to appear.
