Win Doesn’t Change the Narrative at QB

More from Empire Writes Back

McCown starts for the first time since last season.

With that, there will probably be some rust. There will also likely be a bit more pace to the offense.

Frankly there should be. Darnold has started nine games, McCown has been in the league since 2002. At this moment, it would be logical for him to have greater command of the offense.

It isn’t impossible that he will perform quite well, and the Jets offense could look better than it has in several weeks.

Long term, however, that makes not a bit of difference for the team.

It doesn’t matter if the Jets win 75-0 and McCown throws for seven touchdown passes. As soon as Darnold is healthy he starts.

There will be fans out there clamoring for McCown to continue if he wins. Fans will say they believed he should have started all along, and that if he had, the Jets would be in a better position.

Please don’t fall into that trap. It’s the very wrong trap.

The Jets must get Darnold as many reps as he can in 2018. In the middle of his rookie contract, they have to get him ready to compete in 2019 and beyond.

McCown must sit as soon as Darnold is ready to come back. Remember that. No matter the result, this is what has to be.
