David Quinn’s role can’t be forgotten

The New York Rangers hired David Quinn, previously with Boston University in the NCAA, to be their next head coach. It is quite the honor for Quinn as this is one of the most coveted jobs in hockey.

Quinn might be well-respected, but it does not mean that it was not an unorthodox hire, it is.

However, it is pretty clear what the Rangers are trying to do here with Quinn. The goal under Quinn seems to be with development and taking small strides towards greatness.

More from Empire Writes Back

The Rangers are a new look team. They are younger and they do not have a lot of time together under their belt. Quinn is used to that in BU. He will now come to the NHL in a similar role.

His job is to coach the younger players, help them develop and learn how to get the most out of them. He was very successful in doing this.

That is not to say that Quinn is not the next great coach, he can be one day, it is just more to say that if he can come in for a few seasons to work on the talent and help them form a bond without success he will be fine.

If he comes in and helps his players learn the NHL while he too does then he and the team will be fine and the Rangers can get a better coach with developed talent whenever they want.

Either way, it all starts this upcoming season. The Rangers might not be expected to succeed much. However, it can be expected that they emphasize the progress of their players as the season goes on and focus on making small strides as a team. Perfect early in a rebuild.
