The New York Red Bulls helped headline the MLS squad in the MLS All-Star game on Wednesday night in what was a very important night for the league.

The New York Red Bulls had four players get minutes in the MLS All-Star game vs Italian soccer giant, Juventus on Wednesday. The game itself was awesome but the Red Bull players picked a good night to perform.

The MLS All-Stars came up short in penalties vs Juve. However, with over 70,000 fans and a state of the art arena, the MLS All-Star’s admirable performance is not the only story.

Push whatever narratives you have, good or bad, about the MLS All-Star game but, right now, it is not about winning or losing for the MLS players. It is about showcasing the league and its potential as a breakout, world-class, league.

On Wednesday night, that exactly happened. The game was against one of the World’s most popular clubs, the club that now has Cristiano Ronaldo, and it was played in front of a soccer crowd matched by other massive soccer countries.

The MLS and the New York Red Bulls put a lot of people on notice during the match. There were a lot of eyes on Atlanta United and their hometown stars. However, the Red Bulls had three players in the starting XI for the match.

New York, in general, had four total starters if you include Alex Ring of NYCFC. But, Tyler Adams, Aaron Long, and Amir Murillo were not only starters, they played solid. Long was all over on both sides of the filed much like we see during the regular season games.

Tyler Adams is sensational as always in a position that does not always get a lot of glory, and Murillo had plenty of touches right from the get-go.

The “Soccer King of New York,” few games off his 100th goal, Bradley Wright-Phillips, might have missed a vital penalty but played a ton of minutes and garnered a ton attention all throughout the event.

But, to have that many players from the Red Bulls, in front of over 70,000 fans, representing the MLS against a World Class team is so important for soccer in America and New York.

New York athletes took over almost half the starting lineup. The game might have been focused on the fastest growing soccer market, Atlanta, but New York held their own.

The Red Bulls, in particular, handled the stage very well. Besides the aforementioned missed penalty kick in the shootout, everyone there or watching on TV suddenly realized how good the New York Red Bulls are.

The MLS All-Stars did not win but that is okay. New York and the World needed to see the potential of the MLS during that game and they did. It was a wonderful event and far from the joke that a lot of people think it is.

The stadium is world-class, the fans were an outstanding advantage, the players played their hearts out and well, and the MLS put on a spectacle for the ages.

It takes a lot more than one game a year vs global soccer giants in a friendly to gain attention on a global platform or to be taken seriously as a league, but this was a solid step in the right direction.

The 2018 MLS All-Star game showed what the MLS can do in a city where things are done right and planned correctly. The New York Red Bulls produce world-class players who got to show their skills.

What a great night it was for Major League Soccer and the New York Red Bulls. MLS can make it in this world, and the Red Bulls or NYCFC in this city. The All-Star game proved it.
