New York Jets Elijah  McGuire suffered an injury that requires surgery. Despite that fact, the injury may not be overly serious after all.

Now that Sam Darnold has taken his rightful place with the New York Jets, we can move onto other issues around the team.

The biggest casualty of camp so far has been Elijah McGuire. On the first day of practice he suffered a microfracture of his foot, requiring surgery.

Here is an update on the time frame McGuire is looking at being sidelined:

By the time you have read this McGuire will have undergone surgery and we will have an update if that time frame changes. It has been reported that it could be as short as three weeks, though with surgery that doesn’t seem quite likely.

The response to the move is interesting. Some bigger names came in for a tryout, like Alfred Morris and Orleans Darkwa.

Last year, Darkwa ran for a career high 751 yards and five touchdowns for the Giants. Morris is 29 years old and ran for 1,000 yards in three straight seasons with Washington.

However, the Jets went a different route to help the running back room.

The Jets waived tight end Bucky Hodges to make room for another running back, George Atkinson.

For those of you doing a double take, no it’s not THAT George Atkinson. It’s not the former Raiders safety, it’s his son.

No, they didn’t put McGuire on the short-term injured reserve list. That would be a perfect remedy for a player with a serious but short-term injury, wouldn’t it?

Next. Sam is here. dark

Here is a little bit of background on Atkinson, other than his famous father.

He came out after three years with Notre Dame, never rushing for more than 555 yards. He went undrafted and signed with the Raiders in 2014 and bounced on and off their practice squad.

Atkinson has taken the field for the Raiders and the Browns during his travels, returning 15 kicks for 271 yards and carrying the ball seven times for 34 yards and a score.

Wouldn’t it have been wise to sign a player with more experience if they felt McGuire was going to have a problem getting back? It tells us that they have confidence in Isaiah Crowell, Bilal Powell, Thomas Rawls and/or Trent Cannon.

It also means that we will have McGuire back soon. Otherwise they would replace him with someone likely to stick. Atkinson may very well turn out to be just a camp body unless he flashes quickly. Good for the Jets as McGuire has flashed as a threat both in the running and passing game.
