Despite the struggles that New York Mets rookie manager Mickey Callaway has gone through this season, he deserves another chance with this team.

The New York Mets have struggled to say the least in 2018. Looking up at three teams in the division is hardly what the franchise imagined as they went into the season with a healthy starting pitching staff. Between injuries, under-performing players, and no depth we sit where we sit. Another season is lost and Mets fans are getting more annoyed each year.

The plight of the team has put a great deal of heat on Mickey Callaway, rookie manager. Even I have talked about the fact that the team has lacked passion and some of that is on him. He has also made questionable decisions throughout the season. Be it with the pitching or the lineup, it has not been smooth sailing for the first-time skipper.

He has to learn about keeping his foot out of his mouth with the media. Blaming the pressure of New York for losing isn’t a good look. Now with Sandy Alderson out, some of the speculation about Callaway’s job security has increased as of late. If the Mets don’t hire internally a new general manager may want to bring in their own choice to manage the team.

All of that being said, replacing Mickey Callaway at this point would be a mistake. Despite the problems he absolutely deserves another chance with this baseball team.

More from Empire Writes Back

Winning always changes the narrative when it comes to sports. It’s the same for athletes as well as managers. Remember way back when the Mets were 11-1? Look at how Callaway was talked about then (via Newsday):

"After an 11-1 start and Callaway showing a cool hand at the wheel…"

Callaway didn’t change overnight ladies and gentlemen. Just a month later, however, there was an article written by the New York Post entitled “Is Mickey Callaway right for these Mets?

Mickey hasn’t changed, the result has changed. If he has thought to make decisions that are outside the box, it’s because he wants to find the answer. Fans, that is what the manager is supposed to do.

Has Callaway been perfect in year one? Of course not. He has made bad decisions all over, both with the pitching and with the lineup. Folks, that is to be expected. Every manager is going to screw things up sometimes. Even the experienced ones do it. It comes up even more with a team that is losing because the manager is going to look for a way to spark the team however they can. One year does not make Mickey Callaway a bad manager.

What needs to happen is the Mets need to provide Callaway with a complete roster. It has to be one with depth so he can properly deal with injuries. Whoever becomes the general manager must equip him with the proper tools. Callaway should not lose his job over one season. Give him another chance.
