The Yankees won’t get to see New York Mets ace Noah Syndergaard in action during the Subway Series.  The Mets are pulling him from his start on Sunday due to a setback from his current injury.

New York Mets ace Noah Syndergaard is being scratched from his scheduled start on Sunday against the New York Yankees. The news was officially announced on Friday.

Syndergaard experienced some swelling and discomfort in his pitching hand after playing catch. Seth Lugo will now start for the Mets on Sunday.

The Mets were hoping that the man known as “Thor”, who has been on the disabled list since May 29 with a strained index finger ligament, would return on Sunday. He threw 25 pitches in a simulated game on Tuesday. Making the team think he was good to go.

However, as we learned, Syndergaard is not ready to come back and will miss his start. The Mets’ ace will miss another game. This time, on a big stage.

More from New York Mets

This year, Syndergaard is 4-1 with a 3.06 ERA and has 76 strikeouts. The Mets will give him a couple of days off and have him throw a bullpen session after the off-day on Monday.

Don’t worry, there is more negative Mets pitching news. It was announced on Friday that closer Jeurys Familia was placed on the ten-day disabled list due to a right shoulder soreness.

The move is retroactive Thursday. The Mets are recalling pitcher Jacob Rhame from Triple-A Las Vegas to fill Familia’s spot on the roster.

This season, Familia is 2-3 with a 2.48 ERA and 14 saves. His 14 saves are good enough to be tied for sixth in the National League.

Losing Familia is a big hit for the Mets bullpen. Familia was having a solid season. Perhaps the bigger issue is that the Mets’ setup man AJ Ramos is also on the disabled list.

With Familia and Ramos out, the Mets just have Robert Gsellman and Lugo for their closer role. However, Anthony Swarzak could be another closer for the Mets now that he is healthy.

Syndergaard not starting on Sunday isn’t good either. The Mets starting pitchers have struggled since “Thor” went on the DL and the Mets need him as they have lost six straight games and 11 of their last 13.

The Yankees won’t be seeing “Thor” in action during the Subway Series. There have been talks about the Mets trading Syndergaard and Jacob deGrom to the Yankees, but I wrote about why it won’t happen.

Next: It is time for the Mets to just sell

The Yankees might be interested in getting Syndergaard, the Subway Series is a great place to see him in action. Unfortunately, we won’t be able to see Syndergaard in that type of action against a big rival.
