The New York Mets are a bad team right now. The wheels seem to be falling off and they desperately need to do something about it and soon.

With the New York Mets recent six game skid, it seems that the wheels are falling off. The Mets’ bats have seemingly went missing as they have only scored two runs in the last 41 innings.

The pitching staff is coming into its own but the bullpen continues to be a mess. This season looks to be a wash because of it.

While the 103 games remaining seems like a lot to make up time, this team just doesn’t have the fire power turn it around in that span.

Looking at the season, it just seems like the classic Mets season where they start off hot and fans get excited. It seems that it can finally be the repeat season of 2015 then they just die off.

More from Empire Writes Back

The New York Mets just don’t have the pieces for a playoff run and on top of that, the NL East is stacked.

It hasn’t been said in many years but the NL East could possibly has three playoff teams this year. All their division foes, excluding the Marlins, have young budding position players that are going to be around for a while.

Those prospects compliment well with  the mainstay type players such as Bryce Harper and Freddie Freeman.

As for the Mets, with the exception of a couple of position players, they are an old and non-productive group.

So, some contending teams down the stretch can find a Mets veteran position player quite valuable. They can be precious to a contending team as an asset coming off the bench in the post season.

For example, the best Met to date has been Asdrubal Cabrera. He has not only racked up a .286 BA and an .826 OPS, but is a switch-hitting infielder who can provide a contending team with depth and a veteran presence. That has a lot of return value for the Mets.

Players such as Cabrera, Todd Frazier, Adrian Gonzalez, Jose Bautista, Jay Bruce, Juan Lagares, Wilmer Flores, and even Yoenis Cespedes should all be discussed in trade options.

The Mets might not rejuvenate their farm system over night. But, dealing these players is a good start. Sandy Alderson needs to start cleaning house and building towards a more stable future.

The Mets problem is scoring. Lack of doing so will be until they get younger, more athletic and more versatile.

Although their bullpen isn’t solid right now, their pitching isn’t the problem. They need to sell older pieces in order to accumulate prospects and draft picks. Therefore, the Mets should officially start building for the future during the trade deadline in July.
