The Vegas Golden Knights have been built on a lot of things but the people behind them are just brilliant hockey minds.

This point is encouraging for the New York Islanders because they have the ball rolling on it already. Bringing in Lou was a great start to the Islanders front office being better at the whole hockey part.

George McPhee, the general manager of the Knights, and Gerard Gallant, the head coach, should both win awards this year for their work with this team.

More from New York Islanders

Even adding Gallant to the list of people other teams found disposable, they have both done a flawless job building and coaching this team.

The Knights showed that no matter how hard it is to win in this league, no matter what “scraps” teams let you have, if you are good at your job it will all work out.

It is hard to say this Knights’ run has been luck. The ownership and founders of this team found people who can do their jobs.

Like I said, the Islanders have the ball rolling on this already. But still, if the Isles do the right things and the owners and Lou fill the front office with brilliant hockey people and coaches then no matter who the Isles have on the ice, they can be successful.

The New York Islanders need to do some things differently. In the 1980s, they were the standard for how to build a team. However, those days are long gone. They need to start looking at the teams who are better than them to learn how to catch up.

I hope the New York Islanders can learn these three things from the Vegas Golden Knights’ wild but winning season and apply it for themselves.

What a unique time to follow hockey.
