New York Giants: Dez Bryant to New York could work, but is unlikely
Dez Bryant to the Giants could work, but it is unlikely to happen.
Dez Bryant to the New York Giants have been the conversation of topic from the moment he said that his release from Dallas was personal. The Giants could use an excellent talent such as Dez Bryant, there are concerns about is route running and if he would mesh with the rest of the team but let’s break this down a little bit further with a quick Pros and Cons.
What Dez Bryant brings to N.Y.
- Bryant may no longer be the dominant force he once was but he still has the size to be effective at the outside receiver position.
- Even with a little speed decrease, adding Dez would give the Giants an interesting set of weapons. Pairing Dez with Sterling Shepard, Evan Engram and oh yeah a healthy Odell Beckham Jr. with newly minted 2nd overall pick Saquon Barkley would be a luxury of weapons that Pat Shurmur has never had all on one team.
- Dez is also an obvious upgrade over Cody Latimer, no disrespect to Cody because personally I feel he’s due to break out. But Dez Bryant brings a major and proven contributor to this offense and you can never have too many weapons as long as they can play nice together.
What makes Dez signing with NY unlikely
- Dez Bryant has received a reputation as not being a good locker room guy; however Jason Witten and Tony Romo both came to the defense of the former Cowboy. Both stating that he’s an excellent teammate and person, but the subtle doubt that’s been placed out there might be enough to keep the Giants away as they look to change the mindset of a once defeated team.
- Many have stated through the years that Bryant’s route running is suspect at best and that he struggles beating one on one coverage now that his speed as diminished. (This very well could be Dallas scouts, sending out these negative reports but there is some film that shows this). He is currently working with a “route guru” to improve.
- The Giants are trying to transition to using their young players, that brought in Cody Latimer in hopes of finding that he has the talent to play but what just too far behind on the pecking order with the receivers in Denver. Gettleman is always looking for that untapped potential star who wants the chance to show out. If they Bring Dez in this would almost certainly move Cody to the fourth receiver position and the same spot that he was in when he was stuck in the Mile High.
Next: Three safeties the Giants should consider
Simply put the Giants would be getting a better player in position and if Dez is willing to come in on the cheap on a rental contract then I can see Gettleman bringing him after all the rookie deals are signed.
But if Dez is looking for the Giants to commit long-term to him as the Ravens were willing to do, unfortunately it won’t be happening and the Giants will ride into the season with their veteran quarterback in Eli Manning and a large amount of young weapons looking to make a statement from their 3-13 season.
