Rashan Gary, Defensive End, Michigan

Though they’ve started to gather the right personnel, the New York Giants are still in the process of transitioning to a 3-4 defense and could be for the next couple of years.

The roster currently has a glut of linemen, but a solid few don’t exactly fit Bettcher’s defense. Two of those players, in particular, defensive end Kerry Wynn and defensive tackle Josh Mauro, will be free agents at the end of the 2018 season. Quite frankly, the Giants would be better off drafting a player who better fits their defense rather than re-signing either of the two.

Rashan Gary may be a pipe-dream pick by the time the 2019 NFL Draft rolls around, especially since he has J.J. Watt-type potential according to scouts who are familiar with him. However, he should absolutely be on New York’s radar nonetheless.

This upcoming draft class is incredibly deep for defensive linemen and Gary is the best of the bunch. The Michigan product is an athletic freak with both the speed to beat tackles off the edge and the strength to bully linemen out of his way. With the flexibility to play in both 3-4 and 4-3 schemes, Gary would be a perfect fit for Bettcher’s hybrid defense.
