More from New York Jets

The New York Jets could look to take a late-round flier on a wide receiver and give Baker Mayfield a young pass catcher to build chemistry with. When taking a chance on a player late in the draft, it’s smart to take a prospect who has something you can’t teach. Coaches can’t teach size and Javon Wims has plenty. At 6’3, 215 lb. Wims can body defenders downfield and go up and make contested catches. Wims has good ball skills and catches the ball with his hands instead of his body. He’s not the fastest receiver and needs to improve his route running but there’s NFL potential to work with.

The Jets added Terrelle Pryor as a big-bodied receiver this offseason but only on a one-year deal and the Washington Redskins can attest to the risks of that. Also, even after drafting Mayfield, the Jets are expected to start either Josh McCown or Teddy Bridgewater. Mayfield will be practicing with the second or third-team offense and having a target like Wims could help in his development. Mayfield and Wims could build a chemistry together and eventually work their way into the starting lineup.
