Devin Smith

This just in, the Jets aren’t very good at selecting players in the second round. New general manager Mike Maccagnan in, same problem. Ironically it was a similar situation to the one with Stephen Hill. The Jets were looking for a deep threat and they turned to Devin Smith. He also averaged over 20 yards per catch in college (20.7). His best season in terms of receptions brought in only 44. As a senior he caught only 33 passes but for 931 yards and twelve touchdowns.

Was he a one-trick pony? We were soon to find out. Unfortunately, he didn’t often get on the field with a litany of injury problems and when he did he had a tough time getting open. The NFL route tree proved to be more difficult than Smith likely expected and it showed. In his rookie year he was targeted 28 times but only caught nine of those passes. He saw the field long enough to catch one pass in 2016 and that was it.

Receivers of note that were taken later in the draft include Devin Funchess, Dorial Green-Beckham, Tyler Lockett, and later was a guy named Stefon Diggs. You never know, maybe Kirk Cousins would have been inclined to sign with New York if they sported a weapon like Diggs.

There you have it, the ten plagues of the Jets from the NFL draft. Needless to say this would not be the fun part of the Passover seder.
