New York Giants: 5 scenarios to fix the offensive line in one offseason
By Sean Dyer
Scenario 5: Get aggressive in second-tier of FA, draft OL in first-round
In this scenario, whether it’s second overall or after trading back, the New York Giants draft a left tackle in the first round of the draft. The value is greater if they trade back a few slots, but drafting either Orlando Brown, Connor Williams, or Mike McGlinchey would be filling the Giants’ biggest need, regardless of draft position.
If Andrew Norwell’s price tag gets out of New York’s range and they let another team give Justin Pugh his big-money contract after watching him sit on the sidelines so much over the years, they could decide to sign Jack Mewhort.

Mewhort looked like one of the NFL’s best young guards after his first two seasons. Then injuries struck, crippling his last two seasons. If Mewhort’s knee injuries check out, he could provide the Giants with Pro Bowl level play for a fraction of the cost. Also, Mewhort’s offensive line coach for his first two successful seasons was Hal Hunter, the new offensive line coach of the New York Giants.
I know you’re waiting for Weston Richburg to show up in this slideshow, but Brett Jones just makes too much sense financially.
By saving money signing Mewhort instead of Norwell or Pugh, the Giants can go back to the free agent guard market and sign Josh Sitton. Sitton had his $8M option declined by the Chicago Bears last week but vows he has “prime years” left in his career. He was a Pro Bowler as recently as 2016.
After making a pair of free agent guard signings and using their first-round pick (wherever it ends up) on an offensive lineman, the New York Giants cap off their offensive line rebuild by moving Ereck Flowers to right tackle.
Again, this may not solve all of Flowers’s problems, but he can’t be any worse than he was at left tackle. With a fully guaranteed 2018 salary, the Giants need to get something out of Flowers, so moving him to the right side is worth a shot.
