30. CB. Auburn. Carlton Davis. player. Scouting Report. Pick Analysis. 2

The salary cap savings from not signing Kirk Cousins could allow the New York Jets to sign a top free agent cornerback on top of a pass rusher. They could go after Malcolm Butler or Trumaine Johnson, or perhaps just re-sign Morris Claiborne.

Even if the Jets sign a free agent cornerback, they should look to add another in this year’s draft.

More from New York Jets

Carlton Davis would be a good corner for New York to target because of his size, length, and ball skills.

At 6’1 203 lb., Davis fits the bill of a Todd Bowles cornerback. He excels in press-man coverage and uses his size to get himself between the ball and his receiver.

He uses good technique in coverage, allowing him to change direction and stay with receivers. Davis also has good ball skills, finding it in the air and knocking it away.

His physical play and desire to get his hands on the ball could result in penalties at the next level if certain referees don’t let him fight for the ball.

Davis’s speed to run with receivers is also somewhat unproven due to regular help over the top at Auburn. His combine numbers could move him up or down draft boards.

Sports Illustrated sees No. 1 corner potential from Davis:

"A physical press corner, Davis smothers receivers at the line of scrimmage and is extremely difficult to throw on downfield due to his length (6′ 1″, 205 lbs.). He needs to clean up his foot work and not be so physical downfield, but he has the potential to be a No. 1 corner."

It appears that the Jets made a great choice doubling up on safeties in 2017 with Jamal Adams and Marcus Maye. Now, it’s time to improve their cornerback depth chart.

They could sign a big-money free agent, draft one of the top prospects, or both. If Claiborne doesn’t return, New York may have to take both routes to acquiring a corner. If Claiborne re-signs, they could go one way or another.

Regardless, start familiarizing yourself with the names of the top cornerbacks in this year’s class, including Carlton Davis.
