The Redskins may make it more difficult for the New York Jets to acquire Kirk  Cousins.

There may be a development regarding one of the New York Jets biggest offseason questions. Of course that is the quarterback question. We are at a point that the team has a chance to finally find that franchise player, either via the draft or free agency. The biggest name of this year is Kirk Cousins. The fan base has mixed feelings. Readers know how I feel on the matter.

One of the biggest elements to note is that signing him as a free agent allows the Jets to keep their draft picks. What if that fact changes? What if the Jets would need to give up draft picks as compensation? Look at this tweet from Adam Schefter:

Now that would be a fine mess for us Cousins fans, wouldn’t it? If Cousins in fact was given the tag, the Jets would be required to give the Redskins compensation in return for his services. According to Schefter, they also believe that doing this will allow them to trade the quarterback.

If this were to happen, the price tag would be far too large. The franchise tag is set to be approximately $35 million for the quarterback so there would be that. Add to that the idea of giving up draft picks and it would be time to look elsewhere.

Remember though, none of this is official yet. It’s all rumors. Let’s talk about whether or not this really makes sense.

First of all, remember the Redskins have Alex Smith now. This would include a major commitment to Cousins, financially. There is no guarantee that a team will make a trade under those circumstances. What are they to do then? It makes it a very high risk move for Washington.

Why would teams make this trade if he is tagged? There is a solid class of quarterbacks in the draft as we all know. If the team’s aren’t convinced, they can sign an actual free agent for less money, such as Teddy Bridgewater or Tyrod Taylor. The Redskins might actually be making it harder to get rid of Cousins.

You could potentially make the argument for making a trade like this. If the Jets are convinced he is the guy, no matter the cost, they might still do it if he is tagged. Hopefully the Jets will not have to make this decision.
